Fatty Liver

So what is this thing about having fat in the liver? Don’t we have fat in other parts of the body without any problem?  Fat is fat! I am hoping that these and many other questions that you may have about fatty liver may be answered here in this article and hopefully in the rest of the pages of this site.

Fat is not just fat!

For many years we have thought of fat as a tissue that has no function other than support the body structure and provide calories to the body. But fat that develops in the liver is really a different matter.  In Fatty Liver Disease, the liver starts to produce large amounts of triglycerides (a form of fat) that gradually accumulate. The liver also receives large amounts of free fatty acids (fats in their simplest form) from the blood.

Fat has the capacity to go “rancid” easily. In medicine this is called oxidation. It is also known as peroxidation. In peroxidation, fat oxidize and liberate oxygen chemicals that destroy normal tissue.  This is one of the reasons why fat in the liver is not just fat. This fat accumulation can slowly but surely cause the death of liver cells. This usually happens after a few years of having developed a fatty liver.

Check the Video and See What Brian Hudes, MD – gastroenterologist at Emory Johns Creek Hospital gives an overview of Fatty Liver Disease.

Other reasons why this fat accumulation causes liver damage:

  1. Cytokines – chemicals known to produce inflammation and damage are also produced by this fatty tissue.
  2. Mitochondria malfunction – these are the power plants of the cell. When these power plants stop working, liver cells die.

What do all NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) sufferers have in common?

There are two major or common denominators in most of those suffering from steatosis (another name for fatty liver):

  1. Most of the NAFLD persons are obese (are fat).
  2. A great majority have Diabetes Type 2 (Adult-Onset Diabetes Mellitus)

For this reason, most scientist have concluded and with good reason that Fatty liver disease is mainly due to insulin resistance.

Insulin Resistance

Insulin is produced by the pancreas. The major function of insulin is to help sugar (the main body source of energy) to enter and feed the cells of the body.

Insulin resistance is when the body is producing so much insulin but the cells are not responding. This causes the sugar in the blood to elevate (diabetes) and causes the body to use “Fat” as an energy source. A lot of this fat in the form of free fatty acids enter the liver and accumulates there gradually, causing the damage we mentioned earlier.

Insulin resistance is the cause of many diseases and it is caused by the American diet and life-style which is full of fructose, sugar and refined starches. The high content of fat in the american diet also predisposes to insulin resistance.

Gradual Liver Damage

Damage to the liver takes many years. And most of the fatty liver sufferers do not develop any symptoms what so ever.  Until of course the liver gets affected. Take a look at the steps towards liver damage:

  1. Fat builds up in the liver
  2. Cells start damaging for many years as evidenced by blood tests
  3. Fibrosis or scar tissue  replaces normal tissu
  4. Cirrhosis – Total damage to the liver is the final stage.
  5. Some instead of Cirrhosis actually develop Liver Cancer

Liver Cancer

It is hard to know which is worse: Liver cancer or cirrhosis! Since Cancer and Cirrhosis both lead to death. Even though a transplant can be used to replace the bad liver if you develop cirrhosis. There are also known herbal remedies that can reverse early stage cirrhosis.

Solution to this problem

You don’t have to get to that stage. Conventional medicine has no preventative solution for this problem. But natural and alternative medicine has effective methods for resolving fatty liver problems and preventing this condition from advancing to Cirrhosis or cancer.  And I provide all the information you need in this website. So look around and learn.
